j’ai reçu des questions concernant le Z-Ring mod pour le Fanatec Podium DD1/DD2 (voir mon article sur mon dev blog pour plus d’info ) et malheureusement je ne peux pas répondre à chacun la même choses donc j’ouvre cette FAQ et je vais m’efforcer d’y répondre ici, si vous en avez d’autres n’hésitez pas à remplir le formulaire ICI.

Z-Ring c’est quoi exactement?

c’est une bague que j’ai créée (la bague doit être réalisée avec précision) qui s’adapte parfaitement au système actuel “quick-release” du Fanatec Podium DD1 / DD2 pour palier à un problème de flexion de la roue  lorsque l’on ne met pas la petite vis de blocage de la roue.

Ce qui est le propre d’un système “Quick-Release” pour changer rapidement de roue.
Une fois en place le volant est stable comme dans une voiture de course et le ressentit FFB est meilleur car moins mou.

il y a un autre avantage c’est qu’une fois installé on n’y touche plus et lors du changement de roue sur la base Podium vous n’avez rien à faire d’autre que de retirer l’ancienne et remettre la nouvelle roue.

C’est donc plus stable mais aussi plus rapide lors du changement de roue.

Comment obtenir le Z-Ring?

Le Z-RING est réalisé en plastique PETG avec une imprimante 3D de bonne qualité (ou mieux en métal avec un CNC), le fichier 3D STL est fourni gratuitement et il tient compte de la rétraction naturel du PETG pour obtenir les dimensions requises.

La commercialisation du Z-Ring est-elle autorisée?

NON, le Z-Ring est sous license Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) et ne peut être commercialisé sans mon accord ECRIT, il a pour vocation d’être facilement trouvable et partagé gratuitement par les possesseurs d’imprimante 3D avec les sim racers et son prix à la fabrication en PETG ne dépasse pas 1€

 

J’ai qu’une seule roue Fanatec, le Z-Ring mod est-il utile dans ce cas?

NON, il suffit de suivre les instructions pour serrer correctement le QR Fanatec avec votre roue et de visser la petite vis de blocage de la roue pour fixer définitivement et solidement la roue sur celui-ci.

 

Est-ce que mon Podium reste sous garantie après installation du Z-Ring?

OUI, l’installation du Z-Ring est 100% sure, il ne modifie en aucun cas votre base Podium et vous pourrez revenir au système QR par défaut sans aucun souci.

 

Je n’ai pas d’imprimante 3D avez-vous des adresses ou je peux le faire fabriquer?

Je n’ai pas d’adresse à proposer pour l’instant mais je conseille d’ouvrir un sujet sur votre forum de sim racing favoris pour en discuter.

Ce mod n’est pas commercialisable sans mon accord mais à pour vocation d’être partagé et amélioré, n’hésitez pas à en parler dans vos réseaux sociaux et forums pour trouver quelqu’un qui le fabriquera à moindre coût pour vous.

Peut on obtenir les dimensions du Z-Ring?

Les dimensions théoriques ci-dessous peuvent varier et sont à titre indicatifs et pour information seulement. Un Fanatec Podium DD1 ou DD2 est requis pour ajuster votre Z-Ring imprimé 3D du fait de la rétractation naturel du plastique lors de l’impression qui peut varier selon l’imprimante et la marque de filament utilisé.

C’est une pièce de précision:
– le trou intérieur doit être parfaitement ajusté au diamètre du shaft du QR Podium
– l’extérieur mâle qui entre dans le QR femelle du rim doit être parfaitement ajusté
– le fond en biseau doit toucher parfaitement le bord du QR femelle du rim autrement dit la longueur de pièce est très importante

A quoi sert ce mod puisque je n’ai pas de “jeu” dans la roue une fois installée correctement?

Le Z-Ring QR Mod sert à 2 choses:

– à STABILISER la roue en empéchant l’oscillation latérale due à sa flexibilité à cause du caoutchouc
– et aussi à changer de roue plus rapidement sans avoir à utiliser la vis de vérouillage de la roue.

Si vous n’avez pas de “jeu” c’est que vous differenciez le “jeu” mécanique et la “flexibilité” de movement de la roue.

Le Podium avec sa roue correctement installée n’a pas de jeu mécanique mais bien une flexibilité qui n’est pas souhaitable dans un volant de course qui doit etre très rigide une fois installé pour un ressenti correct du direct drive.

Cette flexibilité augmente plus votre roue est déporté du point de flexion (utilisation du HUB+Roue perso par exemple) . Si vous n’etes pas sensible à cette flexibilité latérale tant mieux pour vous mais c’est probablement parce que vous n’avez jamais conduit une voiture de course sur circuit avec un vrai QR.

What’s the Z-Ring exactly?

it’s a ring I created (the ring must be made with precision) which fits perfectly the current “quick-release” system of the Fanatec Podium DD1 / DD2 to overcome a problem of flex of the rim when the small rim locking screw isn’t used.

which is the main characteristic of a system “Quick-Release” to change quickly rim.
Once the Z-Ring in place the steering wheel is stable as in a race car and the FFB is better less soft more sturdy.

it has another advantage, once installed and when changing the rim on the Podium base you have nothing to do other than remove the current rim and put the new rim, that’s it!

It is therefore more stable but also faster when changing rim.

 

How to get the Z-Ring?

The Z-RING is made with PETG plastic with a good quality 3D printer (or in metal/aluminum with a CNC machine). The STL 3D file is provided and is 100% FREE. (it takes into account the natural retraction of the PETG to obtain the required dimensions).

Is the Z-Ring allowed to be sale or used in business context?

No, the Z-Ring is under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) and requires my written consent to be marketed or used in business context, it aims to be easily available and shared from 3D printer owners to others sim racers and its price in PETG do not exceed 1 € to manufacture

 

I only have one Fanatec wheel, is the Z-Ring useful in this case?

NO, just follow the instructions to properly tighten the QR with your rim and screw in the small rim locking screw to permanently fix the rim on your Podium base.

 

Does my podium remain under warranty after installing the Z-Ring?

YES, the installation of the Z-Ring is 100% safe, nothing is changed on your Podium base and you can easily revert back to the default QR system without worry.

 

I do not have a 3D printer, do you have suppliers where I can get it?

I do not have any suppliers yet, but advise you to discuss it on your favorite sim racing forum.

This mode is not marketable without my consent, but aim to be shared and improved, feel free to talk about it in your social networks and your forums to find someone who can manufacture it.

Can we get the dimensions of the Z-Ring?

The theoretical dimensions below may vary and are indicative and for information purpose only. A Fanatec Podium DD1 or DD2 is required to adjust your 3D printed Z-Ring due to the natural shrinkage of the plastic during printing which may vary depending on the printer and filament brand used.

This is a precision object:
– the inner hole must be perfectly adjusted to the diameter of the shaft of the QR Podium
– the male outside part that enters the female QR of the rim must be perfectly adjusted
– the beveled bottom must perfectly touch the edge of the QR female rim in other words the 3D print length is very important.

What is this mod for because I do not have a “mechanical play” in the rim once installed correctly?

The QR Mod Z-Ring serves 2 things:

– STABILIZE the rim avoiding lateral oscillations due to the flexibility of the rubber
– and also to quickly change the rim without using the rim locking screw.

If you do not have a “play”, it is because you distinguish the “mechanical play” from the “flexibility” of the movement of the rim.

The podium, if properly installed, has no “mechanical play”, but a flexibility not suitable for a racing wheel which must be very sturdy once installed for a correct feeling of the direct drive.

This flexibility increases when your rim is offset from the bending (flex) point (by using a hub + a custom rim for example). If you’re not sensitive to this lateral flexibility, good for you, but it probably means you never drive a racing car on track with a racing QR.

INSTALLATION:

(the operation is totally safe and reversible)

– follow the Podium manual (page 16) to remove the QR System


– unload the metal locking ring and the pressure ring (put the pressure ring in safe place we no longer using it)


– to be able to remove easily big black rubber (put the black rubber in safe place we no longer using it), the big rubber is the main cause of the flex of your rim.

 

– insert the Z-Ring (see the image)
– load the locking ring IN REVERSE
– follow again the Podium manual to put back the QR system
– Tighten the locking ring over the Z-Ring

once installed and when changing the rim on the Podium base you have nothing to do other than remove the current rim and put the new rim.

It is therefore more stable (no lateral flex anymore) but also faster when changing rim.
